A Home on the Island

Bodies and Labor

National University of Singapore in collaboration with the Shigang Mama Theatre, Shigang, Taiwan. Feb 24–28, 2018

The goal of ‘A Home on the Island (3)’ is to innovate body-centric methods of documenting, describing and measuring the sociocultural condition of an aging community through theatre and performance.

Inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life, the project focuses on the rhythm and movement of the ageing body in its examination of the relationships between the body and its laboring activity.

Exploring James Thompson’s proposal of the ‘aesthetics of care’ and Michel Foucault’s concepts of ‘care of the self,’ the project seeks the possibility of care in performative practices concerned with social engagement.

Members of Shigang Mama Theatre and theatre practitioners based in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong were attendants at this workshop.
