Bodies and Transformance in Taiwanese Contemporary Theatre
In turning the body space into a highly practiced place, transformance is a series of bodily provocations.
Proposing the concept of transformance, a conscious and rigorous process of self-cultivation towards a re-conceptualized body, the monograph examines the creative process of theatre-making by minoritized cultures in (post)colonial and postmartial Taiwan of the 2000s.
The monograph contends that practitioners of minoritized cultures adopt transformance as a strategy to document and to counteract the disciplinary, and often embodied, practices of ideological and economic hegemony.
Transformance, rather than performance, thus calibrates with far greater precision and acuity the state of the body and the culture that it seeks to create (Routledge, 2020)
